CHAPTER 39
PIERCE
I strode across the lot feeling like a new man. When Iâd rolled out of bed this morning, the last thing I expected to happen was a quickie in my office. I felt like Iâd just been given a shot of adrenaline. I was a whole new man. I realized I was grinning like a fool and quickly hid it away.
âDon!â I called out.
He stopped what he was doing. âWhatâs up?â
âDo you think you can hold this down for a couple hours?â I asked.
âSure,â he said. âEverything okay?â
âYes, Iâm going to take a long lunch with a friend.â
âYou mean the lady youâve been in your trailer with?â he asked with a grin.
âYes, that would be the one,â I said.
âTake your time,â he said. âThereâs nothing I canât handle here.â
âThanks.â
I went over what needed to get done while I was at lunch before walking back to the trailer. I walked inside and found her staring at the drawing on the wall. It was my inspiration. When things got rough, I focused on the drawing. I kept my eyes focused on the goal.
It wasnât exactly art, but it was my vision. I didnât need all the pretty details. I knew what I was going for.
âDid you draw this?â she asked.
âI did,â I said.
âI had no idea you were an artist,â she said.
I shrugged. âI donât think we can call that art. Itâs a sketch. A vision.â
âYour vision is pretty impressive,â she said. âI donât have that kind of creativity. I love that you had a vision and you brought it to life.â
âI probably should have taken a few drawing classes,â I said with a laugh.
âDid you do the actual designs?â
I nodded. âI did, but I worked with an architect to draw up the official plans. He made his own final drawing, but I liked mine better.â
âItâs personal to you,â she said. âI like it. I can see your little touches here and there. The trees and plants with the table sitting outside of that house. It looks lived in. Like a home and not a drawing.â
âThank you,â I said. âThat was the idea. When I sit down and draw these things, Iâm thinking about the people living in the community. I imagine them sitting outside their tiny homes after a long day at work. They get to unwind with other community members. They can drink a beer or have some coffee or whatever. The idea isnât about making million-dollar houses. Itâs a community first. A place to rest and recuperate while taking those first big steps forward back on their journey. The aesthetics are really kind of secondary.â
âItâs perfect,â she said, smiling. âI love it.â
âShould we go?â I asked.
âYouâre sure you can get away?â she asked again.
âPositive.â
We took my truck to a restaurant not too far away. We ordered burgers, fries, and sodas and sat out on the patio. âSo, how many ladies have visited you in that trailer?â she asked with a coy smile.
âMy mama,â I replied. âBut I can promise you, our conversations never required I lock the door.
